Is The Popularity of Social Media Just a Fad: God I Hope So
Billions have been infected by a mysterious energy that emanates from our computer screens and mobile devices. The phenomena has been coined "synergy" and is generated when more than one person contributes wit, banal expressions, videos, and images within a common online forum. Researchers have come to suspect that the widespread effect of this pandemic includes rapid evolution of the part of the brain responsible for narcissism.
Marketers worldwide have joined forces to give birth to an entirely new industry centered around this rampant epidemic, naming it "social media". Their message is that through "social networks" such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest (among others), an individual can be better connected with those they love and those they stalk through the mass distribution of "selfies" (self-portraits), picture quotes, and 15 second video clips. Cellular phone companies have followed suit by creating devices known as "smart phones", which breed these cyber pathogens to the point of critical mass.
What was once thought to be a passing fad generated by college students wanting coeds to know if they are "hot or not" has since proven to be much more than a medium for youthful folly. In fact, the force of the contaminant appears to have an even greater potential for degenerative effects when in the hands of adults to the point of threatening to compromise our social and moral fiber. Worse yet, corporations and government agencies are suspected of using its infectious potential to influence the populace, causing widespread social unrest, political satire, and Black Friday advertisement frenzies.
